Documents you need for simplified naturalization

Collecting and translating documents takes the most time, so start with them. This page lists what the applicant needs and the documents that can prove your ancestor's Hungarian citizenship or origin.

Questions and answers

Is one document about my great-grandfather enough?

No. You need an unbroken chain: the birth certificate of every generation between you and the ancestor. Marriage certificates link maiden and married surnames on the female line.

What if no document survived in the family?

Request an archive certificate from the Hungarian National Archives (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár) or a local archive where pre-war registers may remain. Waiting takes from a few weeks to a couple of months.
