After submission: decision, oath, ID card and passport

After you submit, the case is reviewed, the President of Hungary issues the naturalisation certificate, and you take the oath. This page explains each stage and what to do afterwards.

Questions and answers

When do I become a Hungarian citizen?

Citizenship arises on the day of the oath or solemn pledge.

What if I do not take the oath in time?

If you do not take it within a year of the first summons, the certificate loses its force.

How long does the review take?

The official guide names no deadline, and time spent waiting for missing documents or while the case is suspended does not count. Applicants report durations from a few months to a year or more.
